Using a personal loan to consolidate debts

A consolidation personal loan can cut interest and set a finish date — if the rate is genuinely lower, the term is not absurd, and the old credit is closed. Otherwise it is a new layer on the same habit.

Consolidation is a respectable word for 'one loan to pay the other loans'. Done well, it replaces 20 per cent cards with an 11 per cent instalment contract and a date on which you are finished. Done poorly, it is a 7-year personal loan that funds the same weekend habits while the cards refill.

ASIC's MoneySmart checklist is still the right one: lower total cost, affordable repayment, close old credit, do not extend the term without a reason. This guide applies that checklist to Australian personal loans, as distinct from folding debts into the mortgage.

Add up the real current cost

List each debt: balance, rate, minimum, remaining term if any, and whether it is secured. Include BNPL and overdrafts. Minimums are not a plan; they are a trap. Use a calculator to see payoff dates if you keep paying what you pay today.

If the blended interest is 18 per cent and a personal loan offer is 19 per cent plus a fee, stop. Consolidation is not a personality. It has to be cheaper or meaningfully simpler without being more expensive.

Price the new loan honestly

Use the rate grid reality, not the banner. Include establishment fees. Choose the shortest term you can service. A 7-year consolidation of $14,000 of cards is how $14,000 becomes a small car's worth of interest.

Ask whether extra repayments are allowed without penalty. If they are, you can take a 5-year contract for safety and still target 3 years operationally.

Close, reduce, delete

The settlement letter should pay out named accounts. Then:

  • Close the cards or cut limits to what you will use and clear monthly.
  • Remove stored cards from browsers.
  • Delete BNPL apps.
  • Tell a person you trust you are doing this, because shame is a spending trigger.

Lenders who refinance you without requiring closures are not your friends. They are originating a sequel.

Credit file and home-loan plans

If you intend to apply for a home loan in the next year, consolidation can help by killing card limits, but the new personal loan is a full commitment in the serviceability calculator. Time the sequence. A brand-new personal loan plus a home application next month is a messier file than six months of clean conduct.

Multiple consolidation applications are still multiple enquiries. Apply once, well.

When not to consolidate with a personal loan

  • The only offers you receive are at rates above the cards.
  • You would need a secured loan over an essential car to make the rate work.
  • The budget does not surplus even at the new repayment — the problem is spending or income, not structure.
  • Someone is pressuring you into a broker-originated loan with a large fee added to principal.

Worked sketch

$9,000 card at 21 per cent, $4,000 card at 19 per cent, $3,000 BNPL. Total $16,000. Paying $400/month currently, mostly interest. Unsecured consolidation $16,250 including fee, 11 per cent, 4 years ≈ $420/month, done in 48 months if you never miss and never reborrow. That can be a win. The same $16,250 over 7 years at 11 per cent is a monthly 'relief' and a longer, costlier life. Pick the 4.

If a mortgage consolidation at 6 per cent over 22 years drops the extra repayment to $110, it will feel like a win and may cost more unless you keep paying $420 extra off the home loan. If you will not, stay in the personal loan.

MoneySmart's debt-consolidation page should be open in the next tab while you sign. If the contract cannot beat that page's tests, do not sign it.

Order of operations with a home loan coming

If a mortgage is 6–12 months away, consolidation can help by killing card limits, but the new personal loan must be in the serviceability. Sometimes paying the smallest card to zero and closing it is a better lift than a new five-year loan. Model both inside borrowing power.

Joint consolidation when only one of you spent

The contract does not care who bought the guitar. If both names go on the consolidation loan, both names owe it. That is a relationship conversation, not a rate conversation.

After the payout letter

Call each old lender to confirm zero balances and closure. Screenshots of $0.00 with the account still open are how limits return in the bureau file. Ask for closure confirmation emails and keep them.

The 48-hour cooling conversation

Even if the law does not give you cooling off, give it to yourself. Take the quote home. Add up total repayments. List the accounts that will close. Tell someone who is not paid on origination. If it still makes sense in two days, sign. Consolidation ads are designed for the same-day yes.

If a salesperson is rushing you because a rate expires at midnight, that is information about the salesperson.

What success looks like in twelve months

Old accounts closed, utilisation down, the consolidation loan paid as agreed, and no new BNPL. Your credit file should look quieter. If it looks louder — new cards, a second personal loan — the consolidation failed even if you never missed the new repayment.

Quiet is the aesthetic. Keep it.

Documents to bring, and a last caution

When you sit down with a lender, broker, packager or yard manager, bring a one-page list of debts, the proposed loan contract, and a plan for closing each old account. If they will not look at paper, they are selling speed. Speed is expensive in Australian credit.

Write down the thing you are afraid to ask — the fee, the balloon, the HELP treatment, the break cost — and ask it first, while you still have the nerve. The second conversation is always weaker. If the answer is vague, you do not have an answer.

This desk would rather you delay a week than sign a contract whose comparison rate you cannot explain to a friend. ASIC's MoneySmart remains the public-interest spare brain: use it the night before, not the morning after. And if the product only works on overtime that is not in your contract, it does not work. Buy a smaller thing, or wait. Waiting is still allowed.

People also ask

Will a consolidation loan improve my credit score?
Not immediately. The application is an enquiry and the new loan is a new account. Over time, paying as agreed and reducing utilisation on closed cards can help. Missed payments will not.
Should I consolidate into a personal loan or a home loan?
A personal loan leaves the house out of it and has a nearer end date. A home-loan consolidation can be a lower rate with a much longer tail and security over the property. See our home-loan consolidation guide before mixing the two.
Can I consolidate buy-now-pay-later?
Some lenders allow BNPL in the payout list. You still need to delete the apps. BNPL limits can be treated as commitments in later credit assessments even when the balance is small.
